History Of Women Of Vision Of Charlotte

The Women of Vision of Charlotte chapter began in January 2000 with 22 founding partners led by Deborah Harris. Two years later, the chapter had tripled in size. The importance of building strong foundations, establishing the chapter’s roots of “spirituality, education, and fellowship” was emphasized. These roots have sunk deep and the tree has grown to become a great source of strength.

The spiritual root continues to be the tap root, enabling partners to answer the “calling from Christ.” This spiritual component and focus will always be foundational in all activities. Meetings and events are covered by prayers and will always begin with a devotional.

The education root has heightened our awareness, increased our understanding, and transformed us. Partners continue to be challenged and stretched as we motivate and encourage one another in service.

“Very often the Lord who called us gives us traveling companions for the road, fellow pilgrims following the same route, perhaps sharing the same vision. Our roads converge and we travel together, encouraging, challenging, sharpening, understanding and enriching each other’s lives…”

Susan Scott Sutton in “A Sure Path

Nine years later, as we join with World Vision in their projects in Ethiopia, Guatamala, Appalachia, and Harvest Center, our tree has grown into a forest. The Charlotte chapter has raised more than $1,355,000 since its inception to fund these designated projects.

As of October 2008, we have 162 Partners from Charlotte, Concord, Cornelius, Davidson, Fort Mill SC, Iron Station, Marvin, Monroe, Mooresville, Pawleys Island SC, Waxhaw, and Weddington. There are 48 potential members in the current Cross Cultural Study class.

One unique tradition began when Sister Mary Thomas Burke (one of our founding partners) gave the leadership a globe, which when lighted from within, symbolizes our mission of bringing Christ’s light and love to a darken world. Sister Mary Thomas Burke passed away on November 24, 2002, but the tradition continues to this day. The annual passing of the globe also signifies the passage of that mission from one leadership to the next.

Another tradition for our chapter is the completion of a 7 week Cross Cultural Study called “The Heart of the Matter”.

We encourage participation in WOV activities including Child Sponsorship, attendance at Partnership meetings, $50 annual dues, and support of the Annual Fundraiser.
