Appalachia
We partner with World Vision Appalachia to develop long-term solutions for improving the lives of children and families in Philippi, West Virginia. Together, we nurture and we bring hope. We educate and we inspire.
The Need
· 70% of children in poverty live with a single parent.
· 48% of low income children had a parent employed full time (2006).
· The high school dropout rate was 20.7% (2004).
· 33.5% of youth are currently involved in heavy use of alcohol.
· 23% of the adult population have difficulty reading basic information like road signs, job applications and newspapers.
· The median household income was $27,857 (2005), compared to $46,326 across the nation.
Programs
· We provided initial foundation funding for the Family Initiative, a program assisting families in distress through innovative programs, outreach ministries and existing service organizations.
· We fund a nutrition/wellness program for KidREACH, an after-school enrichment program on Chestnut Ridge.
· We design and staff a 3-day Christian day camp in Philippi, WV, as a Summer enrichment program for less-advantaged young girls, promoting physical, emotional and spiritual well-being in a fun filled environment.
· We support the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Exchange program which encourages participants to give and receive help through the use of personal skills and time, earning “time credits” towards the purchase of items from the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Store. Our partnership donates items to stock the store.
· We encourage the spiritual growth of young girls and develop meaningful relationships by sponsoring their attendance at the ReVOLVE Christian Tour in Charlotte, NC.
